Big Skills was founded in 2001 as a platform for experimental design, film, and animation projects.
Since 2004, Stephanie Hutin has been working on redefining animation so that she and other like-minded artists might feel comfortable identifying as animators. Coming from a background in performance and video, Hutin was confronted with "being an animator" upon entering the Experimental Animation MFA program at CalArts in 2003. Her respect and admiration for the medium caused her to create the experimental collaborative that is the New School for Post-Animative Thought (NewSPAT), a home for fresh ideas in animation. Her film Mammoth Cave will was included in TOMMOROWLAND: CalArts in Moving Pictures are MoMA (Summer 06). Currently she is an assistant professor in the Kinetic Imaging Program at Virginia Commonwealth University. (close)
Florencio Zavala is most recently recognized for his design work, which was included in Print magazine's 2006 New Visual Artists Review. He is currently working toward an MFA in the Graphic Design program at CalArts. Before returning to school Zavala held the position of Senior Art Director at Studio Number One, where he worked with Shepard Fairey since 2001. Zavala's hand-made typography and illustration has been exhibited in various gallery exhibitions worldwide. (close)
